What is the same everywhere in Nottinghamshire?

These figures and rules apply whichever town you live in.

Typical cost: about £7,300–£7,500 for a 4kW system on a three-bed home, or roughly £10,000–£14,000 with a battery.

0% VAT on home solar panels and batteries until 31 March 2027, then due to return to 5%.

Planning: most roof panels are permitted development. Listed buildings, and walls facing a road in conservation areas, are the main exceptions.

Smart Export Guarantee: roughly 5–15p for each kWh you send to the grid, if your system is MCS-certified.

Questions about areas

Which council handles solar planning in my part of Nottinghamshire?

Bassetlaw District Council covers Retford and Worksop. Newark and Sherwood District Council covers Newark, Southwell and Ollerton. Mansfield District Council covers Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop. Ashfield District Council covers Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Hucknall.

Do solar panel prices differ between Nottinghamshire towns?

Not much. Price depends far more on your roof, system size, scaffolding and the kit you choose than on the town. A typical 4kW system costs about £7,300 to £7,500 across the county.

Is the Warm Homes: Local Grant the same in every district?

No. Each area runs it slightly differently. In Ashfield, Nottinghamshire County Council runs it with Nottingham Energy Partnership for homeowners. Bassetlaw runs its own scheme with Nottingham Energy Partnership, while Newark and Sherwood has focused on lower-income private renters and Mansfield started with insulation.

My town isn't listed. Can I still get quotes?

Yes. We take enquiries from across Nottinghamshire and pass them to MCS-certified installers who cover your postcode.
