Why does solar suit homes in Retford?

Retford is a small market town on the River Idle, with the Chesterfield Canal running through it. The homes here are a real mix. Near the Market Square there are older brick buildings. Along London Road, the old Great North Road, you pass Victorian villas, rows of terraces and Edwardian houses. Head out to Ordsall or the newer streets on the edge of town and it is mostly semis, detached houses and bungalows.

That mix is good news for solar. Most semis and detached homes have a roof face pointing roughly south, east or west, and any of those can work. Bungalows often have a long, low roof with plenty of space. Smaller terraced roofs can still take a modest system.

The countryside around Retford is also fairly flat and open, especially east towards the Trent. Fewer hills and tall buildings means less shade on many village roofs. And because some villages in Bassetlaw are not on mains gas, cutting the electricity bill can matter even more for those homes.

We do not fit panels ourselves. We pass your enquiry to up to three vetted, MCS-certified installers who cover the Retford area, and they quote you directly.

How much do solar panels cost for a Retford home?

A typical 4kW system for a three-bed home costs about £7,300 to £7,500 fitted, based on MCS data from spring 2026 (The Eco Experts). The average across England is £1,586 per kW. Here is a rough guide by home size:

HomeSystem sizePanels only (rough guide)With a battery (rough guide)

The 3kW and 5–6kW rows are worked out from the £1,586 per kW average. The battery rows add a typical £3,000–£5,000 for a 4–5kWh battery (Renewable Energy Hub). The 4kW figures come from Heatable. Your real price depends on your roof, scaffolding and the kit you choose.

A 4kW south-facing system makes about 3,400 kWh a year (Stratford Energy). With electricity capped at 26.32p per kWh from October to December 2026 (Uswitch), that could save around £400–£650 a year before export payments. Try your own numbers below.

Do you need planning permission for solar panels in Retford?

Usually not. In England, roof panels count as "permitted development" if they stick out no more than 200mm and stay below the highest part of the roof (Reonic). Permitted development just means you can go ahead without applying.

Retford is a bit different from a new-build town, though. Bassetlaw District Council handles planning here, and the town has two conservation areas. The Retford Conservation Area covers much of the town centre. The separate Retford South Conservation Area runs along London Road, from the railway bridge down to White Houses, and takes in Victorian villas, terraces and old coaching inns (Retford South appraisal).

If you live in a conservation area, panels on a wall that faces the road need permission. A listed building needs planning permission and listed building consent. The council is reviewing all 33 conservation areas in Bassetlaw, and you can read the published appraisals on its conservation area appraisals page.

Many older Retford roofs are slate, clay tile or pantile. Installers can fit panels on all of these, but it is worth asking how they fix the brackets. Our planning permission guide explains the rules in more detail.

Does solar help if your village is off the gas grid?

Many homes in the villages around Retford are not on mains gas. Some heat with oil, some with LPG and some with electric storage heaters. If that is you, it helps to know exactly what solar panels can and cannot do.

Solar panels make electricity, not heat. They will not cut your oil or LPG bill directly.

They can cut your electric bill. This matters most if you use electric heaters, storage heaters or an electric shower.

They can heat your water. A small device called a solar diverter sends spare power to your hot water tank instead of the grid. Ask installers if your home suits one.

They work well with a heat pump. If you are thinking about replacing an oil boiler with a heat pump one day, solar can cover some of the electricity it uses.

Are you retired, or at home most of the day? Then you are likely to use more of your solar power as it is made, which usually means a bigger saving. If the house is empty in the daytime, a battery can store power for the evening.

What grants and help are there in Bassetlaw?

The main grant locally is the Warm Homes: Local Grant. Bassetlaw runs it with Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP), and solar panels are one of the measures on offer (Bassetlaw District Council). In short:

Your home needs an energy rating (EPC) of D, E, F or G. If you do not have one, it can be done as part of the scheme.

Your household income must be under £36,000 a year, or you must live in a postcode that qualifies automatically.

Insulation comes first, before solar or heat pumps.

There is a waiting list, so it can take several months. You can call NEP on 0115 947 2207.

Everyone else can still save. Solar panels and batteries have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, after which VAT is due to go back to 5% (Reonic). The Smart Export Guarantee pays you roughly 5–15p for each unit you send back to the grid, if your system is MCS-certified (Voltflow).

Two older schemes have ended. ECO4 is winding down and only runs to 31 December 2026 to finish existing work (BOXT). Bassetlaw's own Home Upgrade Grant, which helped 117 homes off the gas grid, has also closed (Bassetlaw District Council). See our grants guide for more.

Which villages around Retford do we cover?

We cover the whole DN22 postcode, not just the town. That includes Ordsall, Clarborough, Sutton cum Lound, Babworth, Ranskill, Elkesley and Gamston. To the east, we also cover North and South Leverton, Rampton, Clayworth, Hayton, North Wheatley and East Drayton. If you are in Tuxford or out towards Worksop or Newark, we can help there too.

A few villages near Retford have conservation areas of their own. Bassetlaw has published appraisals for Everton, East Markham and Tuxford, among others. If you live in the older part of one of these villages, the same rules apply as in Retford town centre, so check before panels go on a wall or roof facing the road. Most homes on the edges of these villages are not affected.

Solar panel questions from Retford homeowners

Quick answers to what people in Retford ask most.

Who do I ask about planning for solar panels in Retford?

Bassetlaw District Council handles planning in Retford. Most roof panels do not need permission, but check with the council if your home is listed or is in the Retford or Retford South conservation areas.

Is my house on London Road in a conservation area?

Possibly. The Retford South Conservation Area runs along London Road from the railway bridge down to White Houses. The council's published appraisal has a map showing the exact boundary.

Can I get a free solar grant in Retford?

You might. Bassetlaw's Warm Homes: Local Grant can include solar panels for homes rated EPC D to G where household income is under £36,000, or in certain postcodes. Nottingham Energy Partnership handles applications on 0115 947 2207.

Do solar panels work on pantile roofs?

Yes. Many older Retford homes have clay pantile roofs, and installers use special brackets for them. Ask each installer how they will fix the panels and protect the tiles.

I live in a village outside Retford. Can you still help?

Yes. We cover the whole DN22 area, including villages like Clarborough, Ranskill, Rampton, Gamston and the Levertons.

Are you a Retford solar installer?

No. We are a free introduction service. We pass your enquiry to up to three vetted, MCS-certified installers, and they quote you directly.

Are solar panels worth it in Retford?

For most homes with a south, east or west-facing roof, yes. A 4kW system costs about £7,300 to £7,500 fitted and typically cuts electricity bills by around £400 to £650 a year, plus export payments. That usually means a payback of roughly 9 to 14 years, on panels that last 25 years or more.

How many solar panels do I need for a 3-bed house?

Most three-bed homes suit a 4kW system, which is about 9 or 10 modern 400–450W panels. Smaller homes often fit 3kW (7 or 8 panels) and larger detached homes 5–6kW.

Do solar panels work in winter and on cloudy days?

Yes. Panels run on daylight, not heat, so they still work when it is cloudy. Output is much lower in winter, and most of the roughly 3,400 kWh a 4kW system makes each year comes between April and September.

How long do solar panels last?

Usually 25 to 30 years or more, and most panels come with a 25-year performance warranty. The inverter normally needs replacing once, after about 10 to 15 years.

Do solar panels need cleaning?

Rarely. Rain washes most dirt off a sloping roof. It is worth checking now and then for heavy bird mess or leaves, especially on low-pitched roofs near trees.

Can solar panels power my whole house?

Not all year round. In summer a 4kW system can cover most daytime use, but you stay connected to the grid for evenings and winter. A battery lets you use more of your own power.

Do I need a battery with solar panels?

No, but it helps if the house is empty during the day. A 4–5kWh battery typically adds £3,000 to £5,000 and stores daytime power for the evening. Batteries also have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

How much can I earn selling electricity back to the grid?

Under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers pay roughly 5p to 15p for each kWh you export. Your system must be MCS-certified to qualify, and rates vary, so it pays to compare suppliers.

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

South-facing roofs are best, but east and west-facing roofs work well too. The roof should be in good condition with little shade. Mostly north-facing roofs make much less power. An installer's survey will confirm.

Do solar panels add value to my house?

They can make a home more attractive to buyers through lower bills and a better EPC rating, but the amount varies. Panels you own outright are simpler when you sell than leased 'rent-a-roof' panels.

How do I find a good solar panel installer in Retford?

Choose an MCS-certified installer, get at least three written quotes and check reviews and warranties. We pass your enquiry to up to three vetted, MCS-certified installers who cover DN22, free and with no obligation.
